Apple sells six iPhone lines in October 2026, from $699 to $1,999. That sounds like a hard choice. It is not: most people should buy the iPhone 17, and the four questions below will tell you if you are an exception.

The short answer
| If you... | Buy | US price |
|---|---|---|
| want the best value and keep phones for years | iPhone 17 | $899 |
| want a new iPhone for as little as possible | iPhone 17e | $699 |
| shoot video or need a real zoom lens | iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 |
| want the biggest battery | iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,299 |
| hate heavy, thick phones | iPhone Air | $1,099 |
| read and work on your phone for hours | iPhone Duo | $1,999 |
Prices are Apple's US prices of October 9, 2026, before sales tax, for 256 GB. In the UK, the same numbers apply in pounds; in France, add between €170 and €340.
Question 1: what is your budget?
Under $800: the iPhone 17e at $699. Avoid the new iPhone 16 at $799: it costs more than the 17e and has half its storage. If you can find one, Apple's refurbished iPhone 16 with 256 GB ($739 in October 2026) is the alternative, with two cameras.
$800 to $1,000: the iPhone 17 at $899. This is where Apple's range gives the most for the money.
Over $1,000: decide between the Air, the 18 Pro and the Duo with the questions below. Do not spend over $1,000 by default; spend it for a reason.

Question 2: how much do you use the camera?
- Snapshots, documents, social media: any model. The 17e's single 48 MP camera is good.
- Landscapes, group shots, close-ups: you want an ultra wide camera. That rules out the 17e and the Air. Choose the 17.
- Children's sport, concerts, wildlife, serious video: you want the 18 Pro's 4x telephoto and its variable-aperture main camera.

Question 3: how long do you keep a phone?
If you keep phones four or five years, spend a little more now. The 17's 120 Hz screen and 30-hour battery will still feel good in 2030, and the battery has more margin to lose (see battery health). If you change every two years, resale matters: the Pro Max models hold their value best, the Air and foldables worst. See how fast iPhones lose value.
Question 4: is the shape important to you?
Most people do not care about 2 mm or 12 g. Some people do, a lot. If you find today's phones too heavy, the Air at 165 g is the answer, at the cost of a camera and some battery. If you want a bigger screen without carrying a tablet, the Duo opens to 7.6 inches, but it costs $1,999 and weighs 254 g.
What not to buy
- A new iPhone 16 at Apple's price. $799 for 128 GB, $100 more than a 17e with 256 GB.
- More storage than you use. Check Settings, General, iPhone Storage on your current phone. 256 GB, the base on every model except the 16, is plenty for most people.
- The 1 TB and 2 TB tiers without a reason. On the 18 Pro, going from 512 GB to 1 TB costs $400.

Should I wait for the iPhone 18?
