Why it is the default choice
The screen. ProMotion makes scrolling smoother and lets the screen drop to a very low refresh rate for the always-on display. Until 2025 it cost at least $999. The 17e and the 16 still do without it.
The battery. Up to 30 hours of video playback in Apple's test, against 26 for the 17e, 27 for the Air and 22 for the 16. In daily use, that is the difference between charging every night with margin and charging every night with anxiety.
The cameras. Two 48 MP sensors, main and ultra wide. Close-ups (the ultra wide doubles as a macro camera), group shots and landscapes all come out sharper than on the single-camera 17e or Air.
The storage. 256 GB as a base, twice what the 16 offers at a price only $100 lower.
What it lacks
- A real telephoto. The 2x option is a crop of the main sensor. For 4x and beyond, you need the 18 Pro.
- The Pro camera hardware. No variable aperture, no 4x lens, no 8x mode.
- A reason to upgrade from a 16 Pro. If you already own a recent Pro, the 17 is a sideways move.
